Support and Wellbeing

At Radwinter CofE (VA) Primary School, we believe that every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and supported as they grow and learn. Rooted in our Christian vision of “Growing and learning together to embrace life in all its fullness” (John 10:10), we are committed to nurturing the wellbeing of every child within our caring, happy, and secure school family. This page outlines how we create an environment where each child’s individual needs are understood and met with kindness, respect, fairness, and forgiveness , reflecting the values that underpin all we do.

Our Approach to Behaviour and Wellbeing: The TPP Relational Behaviour Model

We use the TPP Relational Behaviour Model to guide how we support behaviour and wellbeing. This model helps us see behaviour as a form of communication and encourages us to respond with empathy and care. It embodies our core values of kindness, respect, and forgiveness.

Key principles of the TPP model at Radwinter CofE (VA) Primary School include:

  • Behaviour is something to interpret: We understand that children’s behaviour expresses their feelings and needs.
  • Children are prone to make mistakes and responsive to their environment: We consider context and relationships when responding to behaviour.
  • Behaviour management is predominantly through relationships: Strong, positive relationships between staff and children form the foundation for good behaviour.
  • Children who struggle are understood and included: We support all children with compassion and never exclude.
  • Boundaries keep everyone safe: Clear and consistent boundaries maintain security and meet everyone’s needs.
  • Rules are developed together: Children are involved in creating fair and meaningful rules.
  • Consequences focus on restore and repair: We prioritise repairing harm and rebuilding relationships over punishment.
  • ‘Inappropriate’ behaviour signals unmet needs or stress: Behaviour is a sign that a child may be struggling emotionally or socially.
  • Causes lie mainly in environment and relationships: We look beyond behaviour to understand root causes.
  • Solutions come from understanding needs: Tailored support is provided based on each child’s unique circumstances.
  • Effectiveness is measured by wellbeing: We regularly review our practises to meet evolving needs.

How We Support Wellbeing at Radwinter CofE (VA) Primary School

Our support for wellbeing is holistic, ensuring every child thrives emotionally, socially, and spiritually:

  • Individual Needs at the Heart: We recognise every child’s unique talents and challenges. Our dedicated staff work closely with children and families, especially supporting those with SEND and from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Pastoral Leader Support: Mrs Hibbs, our Pastoral Leader, provides individual and group support, including wellbeing interventions such as therapeutic Forest School sessions, social interaction groups, and conflict resolution. She also offers guidance and assistance to families.
  • Parenting Classes: Our Inclusion Leader, Mrs Jarrold, and Pastoral Leader, Mrs Hibbs, jointly run parenting classes that strengthen home-school partnerships and support positive family environments.
  • Forest School and Wellness Activities: Regular Forest School sessions and wellness activities promote emotional resilience, confidence, and a deep connection with nature, fostering awe and wonder.
  • Restorative Practice: When conflicts arise, we use restorative conversations to help children understand the impact of their actions and rebuild positive relationships, reflecting our value of forgiveness.
  • Inclusive Community: We celebrate diversity and prepare children for life in a multi-cultural society, ensuring no child feels excluded or marginalised.
  • Spiritual and Emotional Growth: Through daily collective worship and strong links with our local Church community, children develop their own values and beliefs, promoting hope, dignity, and belonging.
  • Milo the Dog, Our Therapy Dog: Milo is a much-loved member of our school family who provides comfort and emotional support to children, helping to reduce anxiety and promote wellbeing.
  • Zones of Regulation: We teach children to recognise and manage their emotions using the Zones of Regulation framework, helping them build self-awareness and emotional control.
  • Cosy Spaces: We have two dedicated calming areas — The Hive and The Retreat — where children can access counselling, sensory time, and relaxation sessions such as Stretch and Relax. These spaces support mindfulness and emotional regulation.
  • Mindfulness and Cosy Club: Mindfulness is woven through many of our sessions and clubs, including our popular Cosy Club, which supports children in developing calmness, focus, and emotional wellbeing.

Living Our Vision Through Support and Wellbeing
Our Christian vision, inspired by John 10:10 — “I came to give life – Life in all its fullness” — shapes how we nurture wellbeing every day. We believe happiness and emotional health are essential foundations for learning and growth. By embedding our values of fairness, kindness, respect, forgiveness, and service, we empower children to flourish academically, socially, and spiritually.

Our approach ensures that every child feels valued and supported to face life’s challenges confidently and with joy.

How You Can Support Your Child’s Wellbeing

We encourage parents and carers to be active partners in supporting children’s wellbeing:

  • Stay Connected: Keep in regular contact with your child’s class teacher and share insights about your child’s needs or experiences.
  • Encourage Open Communication: Talk with your child about their feelings and experiences at school.
  • Participate in School Life: Join events and activities that promote wellbeing and community spirit.
  • Reach Out: If you have concerns about your child’s wellbeing or behaviour, please contact Mrs Hibbs, our Pastoral Leader.
