History of Our School

Welcome to the History of Radwinter CofE Primary School—a place deeply rooted in the rich heritage of Radwinter village and its surrounding community. As a Church of England Voluntary Aided School, our story is intertwined with the history and traditions of this rural Essex village, reflecting our commitment to growing and learning together to embrace life in all its fullness.

Our Village Heritage

Radwinter is a charming village and civil parish in Uttlesford, Essex, with a history stretching back to the mediaeval period. It was once home to four manors and is centred around the beautiful 14th-century Church of St Mary, which was lovingly renovated and expanded in the late 19th century. These historical landmarks anchor our community and provide a fascinating backdrop for our children’s learning.

The village has also played its part in more recent history. During World War II, Radwinter hosted a wartime harvest camp—a chapter that our Key Stage 2 children explore in depth during their Britain at War topic. This local connection helps our children appreciate the sacrifices and resilience of those who lived here before them.

The School’s Educational Roots

Radwinter CofE Primary School’s history is built on a longstanding tradition of education in the village. Before our school was established, dame schools provided early learning opportunities, laying the foundation for education in Radwinter. The Bullock family, significant contributors to both the village and our school’s development, are honoured through one of our school houses—Bullock—celebrating their lasting legacy.

Our school currently has four houses, each named after notable local figures who have shaped Radwinter and its history:

  • Bullock: Recognising the Bullock family’s contributions to education and village life.
  • Nesfield: Named after William Eden Nesfield, an architect responsible for restoring the Church of St Mary and rebuilding the village centre after the Great Fire of 1874. This event is studied by our Key Stage 1 children in the From Tiny Sparks topic.
  • Harvey: Honouring William Harvey (1578–1657), the pioneering physician who discovered blood circulation. Though born in Kent, Harvey is buried at Hempstead Church, linking him to our local area. Our children learn about his scientific achievements during their Science lessons on the human body.
  • Turpin: Named after Dick Turpin, the infamous highwayman born in nearby Hempstead. His life and legacy are studied in Key Stage 2’s Crime and Punishment topic, where children engage critically with history by debating whether he deserves this recognition.

Connecting History with Our Vision and Values

At Radwinter CofE Primary School, history is much more than dates and facts—it is a way to embrace life in all its fullness by understanding our place in a wider community and world. Our curriculum is carefully designed to:

  • Foster critical thinking and a strong chronological understanding of British history.
  • Help children appreciate the diversity and richness of our local heritage.
  • Encourage them to see themselves as part of an ongoing story, learning from the past to shape a hopeful and respectful future.

Our Christian values of fairness, forgiveness, kindness, respect, and service underpin this learning. We encourage children to reflect on the lives and legacies of those who came before them, drawing lessons about community, resilience, and moral courage.

Learning from Our Local History

By exploring Radwinter’s history and the stories of its people, our children develop a deep sense of belonging and pride. They learn that history is not just about the past—it’s about understanding who we are today and how we can contribute positively to the world around us.

Our school’s commitment to inclusion means we ensure every child, regardless of background, feels valued and connected to our shared heritage. This approach supports our vision of a caring, happy, and secure environment where every child can flourish.
