EYFS

In every child, there is a world waiting to be discovered.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at Radwinter CofE Primary School

Welcome to the Early Years at Radwinter CofE (VA) Primary School, a warm place where every child is valued and nurtured to grow and learn together. Our EYFS provision reflects our Christian vision of “life in all its fullness” (John 10:10), providing a caring, happy, and secure environment where our youngest children can flourish and develop a lifelong love of learning.

A Special Place to Learn and Grow

Our EYFS classroom, Hedgehog Class, is a vibrant and inspiring space where BIG questions are encouraged, collaboration is celebrated, and imagination leads the way. Here, children learn not only to be confident mathematicians and happy writers but also to be kind friends who show respect and care for one another. Our dedicated staff members ensure that every child feels safe, valued, and supported as they embark on their learning journey.

What Will Your Child Learn?

At Radwinter CofE Primary School, our EYFS curriculum is rich with wonder and memorable experiences designed to:

  • Develop children physically, verbally, cognitively, and emotionally in an environment that values all cultures, communities, and people.
  • Encourage children to be confident, independent learners who believe in themselves and interact positively with others.
  • Blend adult-directed activities with uninterrupted child-initiated play, recognising that play is fundamental to early learning.
  • Foster warm, positive relationships between staff, children, and parents, ensuring consistent routines and strong partnerships.

Our curriculum is built on the firm foundation that early education plays a crucial role in a child’s future success. We provide exciting opportunities for exploration, challenge, and adventure that instil a real love of learning.

How Will Your Child Be Taught?

We carefully follow the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage, ensuring your child’s welfare and safeguarding are of the highest priority.

  • We create a language-rich environment using songs, nursery rhymes, stories, and quality interactions to help children become confident communicators.
  • We have received training in Greg Bottrill's Drawing Club, enabling us to deliver literacy lessons in a joyful and imaginative way that truly captivates children's love of learning
  • Phonics is taught systematically using Little Wandle Letters and Sounds to support early reading skills, alongside the enjoyment and exploration of books.
  • Mathematical thinking is developed through direct teaching and practical, real-life experiences, helping children become confident mathematicians. We utilise NCETM Mastering Number and White Rose Maths to further support mathematical learning, providing structured approaches that enhance children's understanding and engagement with mathematical concepts.
  • Our outdoor environment supports physical development and sensory exploration with a mud kitchen, sandpit, and Forest School sessions, encouraging children to connect with nature in all weathers.
  • The curriculum is flexible and responsive, adapting to children’s interests and needs, supported by classroom enhancements, trips, visitors, and carefully chosen key texts that promote speech, language, and communication development.
  • We recognise the importance of parental engagement and work hard to build strong home-school partnerships that support every child’s learning and wellbeing.

What Outcomes Can you Expect for Your Child?

Our EYFS curriculum ensures that children make excellent progress from their individual starting points by the end of their reception year:

  • Children develop a strong sense of self, social skills, and academic knowledge, preparing them confidently for Year One.
  • They build characteristics of effective learning, such as curiosity, resilience, and the ability to apply their knowledge across different situations.
  • Our children are encouraged to take risks, reflect on their successes and challenges, and learn from their experiences.
  • Most importantly, children in EYFS are happy, creative, and engaged — inspired to come to school and eager to learn.

By embedding our school values of fairness, forgiveness, kindness, respect, and service into everyday learning, we nurture children who live out these values and embrace life in all its fullness.
