Behaviour at Radwinter CofE Primary School

At Radwinter CofE Primary School, a Church of England Voluntary Aided primary school, we believe that positive behaviour and strong relationships are the foundation for a happy, safe, and effective learning environment.

This page outlines our Behaviour and Relationships Policy, which is designed to promote fairness, kindness, respect, forgiveness, and service—values deeply rooted in our Christian vision of “Growing and learning together to embrace life in all its fullness.”

Our Approach to Behaviour and Relationships

Our Behaviour and Relationships Policy reflects our commitment to creating an inclusive, supportive school community where every child feels valued, secure, and able to thrive. Inspired by John 10:10, we strive to provide life in all its fullness by nurturing not only academic progress but also emotional wellbeing and positive social development.

A Caring and Compassionate Ethos

  • Connection and Belonging: We prioritise building strong, trusting relationships between staff and children. Every child is encouraged to feel a sense of belonging within our school family, supported by approachable and caring adults who are here to help, not just to discipline.
  • Trauma Perceptive Practice (TPP): Our school ethos aligns with the Essex Approach to behaviour and emotional wellbeing, focusing on compassion, kindness, hope, and connection. We understand that behaviour is a form of communication and seek to respond with empathy and support.
  • Safety and Respect: We maintain an environment where everyone—children, staff, and families—is treated fairly and respectfully. This ensures that all members of our community can work and learn together in harmony.

High Expectations and Consistency

We hold high expectations for all children while recognising individual needs and differences. Our consistent routines and clear systems help children develop independence, responsibility, and respect for themselves, others, and the wider community.

Our expectations apply throughout the school day and during any school-related activities off-site, ensuring children represent Radwinter CofE Primary School with pride and care.

Behaviour is a Learning Journey

We recognise that learning to regulate behaviour is a developmental process. Children may test boundaries or react differently to various emotions such as stress, boredom, or excitement. Our role as adults is to guide them patiently and constructively, helping them understand and manage their feelings.

  • Connection Before Correction: We believe that maintaining positive relationships is key to supporting behavioural development. When challenges arise, we first seek to connect with the child to understand their needs before guiding them towards positive choices.
  • Co-Regulation and Resilience: Staff work alongside children to support self-regulation and build resilience, equipping them with strategies to manage their behaviour both now and in the future.
  • Restoration and Repair: When mistakes happen, we encourage children to reflect, restore relationships, and learn from the experience, fostering a culture of forgiveness and growth.

Supporting Every Child

We are proud of our inclusive approach, especially in supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Our OFSTED inspection in April 2024 described our SEND provision as “impressive”, highlighting our dedication to ensuring all children feel accepted and supported.

As one pupil beautifully expressed: “You’ll never be lonely here. It doesn’t matter what you look like. You can believe in anything you want. Everyone is accepted.

How We Work Together

We believe behaviour is best managed through partnership between school, families, and the wider community. We keep open lines of communication to ensure that children receive consistent support both at school and at home.

At Radwinter CofE Primary School, our Behaviour and Relationships Policy is a living expression of our Christian values and vision.
